The dauphin’s bedchamber

The dauphin’s bedchamber

The dauphin’s bedroom is reached from the marble courtyard by crossing a guardroom and two antechambers. Its function, dimensions and decor date from 1747. Prior to that a smaller room was here, successively the gilt study where Monseigneur exhibited the paintings in his collection, and the study of the regent, who died here in 1723. Gabriel made the drawings for this room as well as for all the decoration work carried out during his tenure as the king’s first architect (1742 to 1775). In keeping with the custom of the time, the alcove was hung with silks while the rest of the room was panelled by carved oak decorated with gilt motifs on a white ground (from the workshop of Jacques Verbeckt, who made most of the panelling intended for Versailles at that time).
The dauphin’s bed no longer exists and has been replaced by a bed “a la duchesse” — in other words, the canopy is not held up by pillars — made for the marquise de Crequy ca. 1740; its fabrics (opposite) are decorated with stitched foliage and medallion motifs; those on the headboard depict the shepherd Endymion asleep.
The painting of a farm to the right of the bed (above) is a copy that Queen Marie Leszczinska made of an original by her drawing teacher Jean-Baptiste Oudry, which is in the Louvre.

Preparing for Queen's Day

Preparing for Queen's Day

In The Hague, day before Queen's Day in Holland.

Queen's Day is one of the biggest events in the Netherlands. It's a national holiday in the Netherlands, celebrating the birthday of our former queen.
Each year hundreds of thousands of dutch people go to free markets and participate festivals all over the country.

And orange is our country's national color besides the red, white and blue (flag color).
